Music in Worship
Welcome to all! At St. Ann, our entire staff is committed to
creating an environment that best enables our community to fully
participate in worship. In the music department, we seek to fulfill
that commitment by encouraging participation through the use of
well-trained song leaders, thoroughly prepared choirs and
instrumentalists, and thoughtfully chosen song texts that reflect
the scriptural readings and lessons of the season.
As a worshipping community, we are called to take our part in the
liturgy. Just as the priest has gestures and words that he must
recite or sing in order for the Eucharistic celebration to be
fulfilled, so does the congregation have its own responsibilities of
gesture, word, and song. We are here for the sole purpose of
praising our God – just as the saints and angels are doing at the
very same time with us!
For some, the love of music calls them to be more fully involved in
the Ministry of Music. Here, we become a more intimate family that
joins together in friendship, faith and harmony to worship and
praise the Lord. If you are drawn to give thanks to God for the
special gifts that He has given to you, browse through any of our
links and find a place where you might enjoy using your talent. We
have all experienced the joy of receiving abundant blessings in
return for our gifts of time, talent, and treasure!

The
Vision of the St. Ann Church Choir is:
-
To sing God’s
praises in song
-
To grow in our
abilities, and so
-
To competently
lead our congregation
-
To be an integral
part of the liturgy
-
To be an active
member of our community
-
To grow in
fellowship with each other.
The St. Ann Church Choir rehearses on Wednesday evening from 7:00 –
9:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Changes to this schedule will be
clearly noted on the
choir calendar and posted on the web site. The
choir also meets in the Parish Hall 45 minutes prior to scheduled
Mass for a review of that day’s music. The choir regularly sings at
the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Once a month from November through March, we
rotate to a different Mass in order to bring our music to the entire
community.
For all who enjoy choral singing but may be too busy for a
year-round commitment, there are short-term options which include:
-
Christmas Choir – October until Christmas Day
-
Pentecost Choir –
After Easter until June
-
Summer Choir –
Last Sunday of each month, June, July and August

Summer choir is ideal for teachers as well as students home for the
summer, hardworking professionals as well as retirees, and our moms
and teens - many of whom may not otherwise have the time in their
busy schedules for weeknight rehearsals. Please join us in the
Parish Hall at 9:15 a.m. to meet everyone and rehearse a few songs
before Mass. All are invited; come have a good time meeting some
wonderful people that share your love of
choral music.

The St. Ann Church Youth
Choir
The Children’s Choir of St. Ann Parish provides our young
parishioners with the opportunity to sing the Mass, and to learn
early in their Christian lives the joy of sharing their musical
gifts. Through their involvement they learn the importance of
actively participating in the Church community and are rewarded with
a greater understanding and appreciation of the Liturgy.
The Choir
sings monthly at a Sunday Mass, on Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday and
at all-school Masses.
Rehearsals
are held on Thursday afternoon in
the school’s music room from 3-4 p.m. The Children’s Choir is under
the direction of Mrs. Marjorie Huelsman
and is administered by Mrs. Cynthia Dallas.
A completed
registration/consent form is required for membership in the Youth
Choir.

Instrumentalists
 |
St. Ann Music Ministry would like to
invite trained instrumentalists to contribute their time and
talent to the church by enhancing our worship with their
gift of music. Beyond the important seasons of Christmas and
Easter, there is also a blessing derived from hearing
beautiful instrumental music and accompaniment throughout
the church year. We ask you to consider playing at an
occasional service in order to elevate the music at the
Mass. String instruments, including guitar and bass, and
orchestral winds are particularly valuable. |

Bell Choir |
| |
For anyone who loves music, there is now an opportunity to
join the newly formed Bell Choir. Starting on tone chimes,
we will learn music to accompany our choir at Christmas and
Easter. As this group builds, we will expand the program in
both playing opportunities and acquisition of instruments.
|

Folk Ensemble |
 |
Folk Mass instruments, especially guitars, bass, and C
instruments have the opportunity to play in our ensemble at
St. Ann Church. Joined by auditioned singers, we explore the
finer contemporary works as well as traditional Church
repertoire. We currently gather in the choir area
immediately before the assigned folk mass. As the group
grows in size, we will add a separate rehearsal time
especially for this ensemble.
For additional information about any of our instrumental
opportunities, contact Cynthia Dallas – Director of Music |

Wedding Music

Wedding Liturgies are an important part of the Sacramental life of
the Church. At St. Ann, we take great care in assisting our couples
in the selection of the music and readings for their wedding Mass.
At the
earliest possible date, you are asked to contact the parish office
to set up an appointment with the priest to confirm your eligibility
to marry in the Church and to receive your copy of “The Wedding
Guidelines”.
Brides-to-be will be contacted by the Director of Music Ministries
when your application has been completed and submitted to your
presider. At the appointment with the Music Director, the bride and
groom will choose from a large selection of appropriate repertoire
and create a wedding liturgy that truly reflects their faith and
their place in the community of St. Ann.

Music in Worship
THE GENERAL
INSTRUCTION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL (GIRM), Third Typical Edition
reaffirms the assertion of the Second Vatican Council that singing
forms a “necessary or integral part of the liturgy.” The words and
actions of the liturgy are joined with music in such a way that the
liturgy has a musical character.
According to “Singing Our Worship” by J. Michael McMahon, the
liturgy is first of all an action of Christ himself. The Second
Vatican Council taught that in
the
liturgy Christ is present in many ways. In the Eucharistic liturgy
He is present not only in the person of the bishop or priest who
presides over the celebration and acts in the person of Christ but
also and especially under the forms of bread and wine. Christ is
present in the actions of the other sacraments as well, for they
too, bring about transformation and renewal. Christ himself is
speaking when the Scriptures are proclaimed in the assembly of the
faithful. Christ “is present, lastly, when the Church prays and
sings, for He promised: “Where two or three are gathered together in
my name, there I am in the midst of them.” Singing is an important
action of the liturgy because it is one of the ways in which Christ
is present and acting in the midst of the community.
The
GIRM regards the primary role of music to be its ritual function,
enabling the community to participate in the texts and actions of
the rite -- to sing the liturgy.
Because music is not only important but also integral to the
celebration of the liturgy, the GIRM directs that singing should be
part of every Sunday and holy day Mass. This norm challenges the
practice of setting aside a “quiet Mass” without singing. Moreover,
the GIRM suggests that singing should normally be included even at
weekday Masses, even though not all the parts of the Mass would need
to be sung.
In
addition to its ritual function, however, music draws the human
spirit into expressions of joy, unity, and love. The GIRM quotes the
saying of St. Augustine that “singing is for one who loves,” and the
well-known proverb that one who sings well prays twice. Along with
the beauty of our worship space and of its art, the beauty of music
should contribute to the dignity of liturgical action.
